Theme Mimosa. The Thermometer Outside the Window
Olfactorium, Fragrance Theme series
Sunshine in a bottle.
Outside the weather station window, on the frame, hung an old glass thermometer. All winter Darina had read it through the glass without opening the window: it was cold and damp, and there was nothing to look at anyway.
The station stood on a hill outside town. Since November almost every line in the observation log held one word: "overcast". Darina had grown so used to grey that she had stopped expecting anything else.
On the first morning of March she put Theme Mimosa on her wrists. Mandarin sounded bright and sunny, cardamom added a dry spicy spark, and Darina wanted to raise the blinds all the way up.
By noon mimosa and hyacinth had opened on her skin, fluffy, yellow and warm. The clouds over the hill parted, and for the first time in many weeks the word "clear" appeared in the log.
After lunch Yefim, who looked after the instruments on the site, came into the equipment room. He put a mug of tea on the table and sniffed.
"Darina, has mimosa come into bloom in here? It smells like spring in the sun," said Yefim. Darina laughed and showed him the line in the log: "See for yourself. Clear today."
By evening benzoin and sandalwood remained on her skin, soft and warm. The sun was setting behind the hill, and the thermometer outside the window still read twelve degrees above zero.
Before leaving Darina turned the handle and threw open the window beside the thermometer. Warm March air came into the room.
How it sounds
The opening is bright and fresh: mandarin gives a sunny spark, plum adds soft sweetness, cardamom and coriander a dry spice, and chamomile a warm herbal note.
At the heart is the main theme, mimosa: fluffy, powdery and warm. Beside it hyacinth and violet sound cool and tender, magnolia and freesia add freshness, and galbanum holds the green stem.
In the base benzoin gives a soft sweet warmth, sandalwood and cedar calm wood, and patchouli a light depth, and mimosa stays on the skin to the very end.
What makes it special
Theme Mimosa belongs to the Fragrance Theme series of the Olfactorium collection. The series is conceived as a set of études, each fragrance exploring one perfume theme. Here the theme is mimosa, and the motto is "sunshine in a bottle": the fragrance was made to awaken joy and optimism. It is a fresh floral women's fragrance for spring.
MaraMorevna on Fragrantica writes: "Theme Mimosa is like a ray of sunshine on a spring day, radiant and awakening joy." Chernika9 on Kosmetista notes: "In its sound the fragrance is very like natural mimosa, but other notes can be felt in it too," and calls it "a breath of spring".
The author of the "Kadka Parfyuma" channel on Dzen describes it as a mimosa "with a creamy-powdery shade, delicate, watercolour" and admits: "With a fragrance like this I begin to love spring again."
People wear it for light: on the first sunny days, and on grey days when they want to call spring in themselves.
