Granola Sorbet. The Wooden Bird Feeder

A breakfast you wear.

On a shelf in the mill storeroom stood a wooden bird feeder with a sloping roof. Khariton had nailed it together in spring from leftover planks, meant to hang it by his house and forgot once the work began.

Khariton milled oats at a small mill by the river. In autumn there were many orders, and he came to the millstones before dawn.

In November the first frost struck. In the morning Khariton put Granola Sorbet on his wrists, and fig, oat biscuit, raspberry and strawberry sounded soft and sweet.

By noon oats, hazelnut, dried fruit and chocolate opened on his skin, warm and grainy, with light flowers of violet and iris. It was cold in the mill, but Khariton felt cosy all day and worked without hurrying.

Pelageya, a neighbour from the next street, came in for a sack of oats for pancakes.

"Khariton, you smell of oat biscuits straight from the oven. And the tits under my window have been sitting hungry for two days, I have nothing to feed them from," said Pelageya. Khariton remembered the storeroom.

By evening vanilla, sandalwood, amber and musk remained, soft and creamy, and the oats still sounded close by. Khariton took the feeder down from the shelf and poured a handful of oats into it.

He hung the feeder on a birch branch under Pelageya's window, and the first tit flew to it before dark.

How it sounds

The opening is soft and sweet: fig and oat biscuit sound warm and cosy, while raspberry and strawberry add a light berry juiciness.

The heart is all about oats: dry, grainy, real. Hazelnut, dried fruit, raisins, chocolate and coconut give it volume, and primrose, cornflower, rose, violet, iris and freesia add quiet flowers.

In the base ambrette, vanilla, sandalwood, amber and musk leave a soft creamy trail that lasts a long time.

What makes it special

Granola Sorbet belongs to the Olfactorium collection and the sorbet series. The brand describes it as a fragrance created to immerse you in softness and comfort, in the smoothness of appetising grainy accords. It is a sweet cereal unisex fragrance for autumn and winter.

Chernika9 on Kosmetista writes: "It is very unusual in perfumery to smell oats, and realistic ones, with nothing added. Grainy, restrained, slightly dry."

People wear it for cosiness: on the first frosty day and through long winter work.
