Debauch. The Fencing Mask
Updated: Oct 16

Varlaam's mask lay in the fencing hall on a shelf of its own. Its mesh had darkened with time and there was a mark on the side from an old hit, but Varlaam did not want to replace it.
In the hall they said Varlaam attacked daringly, as if he wanted to end the bout in the first second. Yet after every bout he was the first to take off his mask, shake his opponent's hand and thank them for the match.
In October the hall hosted the autumn tournament. In the morning Varlaam put Debauch on his wrists, and green orange, bergamot, lemon and aldehydes sounded bright and cool, almost ringing.
He fought his first bout just as brightly: three quick attacks, and the score was opened. By midday clove and rose, pine and cypress, cinnamon and nutmeg had opened on his skin, and the scent became solemn and focused.
Agrafena refereed the final. Before it began she checked the fencers' weapons and lingered beside Varlaam.
"You smell as if you came here to win. Good luck," Agrafena said.
The bout was long. Varlaam attacked more calmly now and won the last touch.
By evening white cedar, sandalwood, styrax, vanilla and leather remained on his skin, warm and soft. Varlaam took off his mask, shook his opponent's hand and put it back on its shelf.
How it sounds
The opening is bright and intense: green orange, bergamot, lemon and mandarin sound cool, basil adds an herbal note, and aldehydes make the opening ring.
In the heart the fragrance gradually softens and turns solemn. Clove gives the flowers tartness and a light salty shade, rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, lily and iris sound full, pine, cypress, birch and galbanum add coniferous green, and pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg warm spice.
In the base white cedar appears transparently, surrounded by dense earthy and resinous notes: patchouli, vetiver, styrax, leather and oakmoss. Vanilla, tonka bean, musk and ambergris leave a long soft trail.
What makes it special
Debauch belongs to Chilini Private, the brand's private collection of costly and rare materials that take a long time to infuse and mature. The brand describes it as a resinous spicy fragrance, composed and never shouting: the bright opening gradually softens, clove shades the flowers, and by the finish cedar appears transparently. It is a unisex spicy chypre fragrance for spring and autumn.
kotstepan writes on his blog: "It captures you from the first notes, sinks into the skin and makes you think only of it."
@sunshine_love_cosmetics on Instagram notes: "On me it sounds harmonious and very beautiful. Languid, resinous, with a woody aldehydic accord."
The author of the hab_tales Telegram channel writes: "Everything is well-mannered and proper."
People wear it for a confident start: at an important meeting, at a competition and on a day that has to begin brightly and end with dignity.
