He wound his watch every morning, standing at the window, twenty turns of the crown under his thumb. On Monday, at the seventh turn, the crown went light and empty, and the spring stopped pushing back. The second hand twitched and stood still.

It had been his father's watch. He had changed the strap three times and the glass once, but the case had kept its fine scratches, and one of them, a deep one right by the crown, he remembered from childhood.

The workshop was in the next street, in a half-basement where his father used to take it for cleaning. He went on foot. Wet leaves stuck to his soles, and his left shoe, resoled last winter, still pinched a little across the instep. Since morning he had been wearing Adequate, as he always did on Mondays.

The half-basement was gone. In its place a shop window glowed; inside it was bright and dry and smelled of new carpet, and a young man in a narrow jacket came forward with a catalogue under his arm. He looked at the scratched case and said politely that they did not work with watches like this, and it would be more sensible to choose a new one. He opened the catalogue at a page of prices and turned it towards his visitor.

The light from the ceiling hurt his eyes, the shoe pinched. He did not argue. He unbuttoned his cuff, took the watch off and held it out across the counter. From his wrist, warmed under the strap, warmth rose up: honey, leather and something animal beneath them, while the lavender of the morning had almost gone. The young man stopped in mid-sentence and bent over the dial lower than he needed to.

An old man came out of the back room with a loupe pushed up on his forehead. He took the watch, turned it to the light and found the scratch by the crown with his fingernail. "The mainspring. A week," he said, and wrote down the surname without asking how it was spelled.

Outside it was drizzling. At the corner, out of habit, he raised his hand to check the time and saw a pale band of skin on his wrist. It still smelled of honey.

Self-confidence without proof and the pleasure of comfort, resting on "old money".

How it wears

Lavender rises first, dry and clean, and mint cools its edge like air from a window opened onto October. Clove at once warms them from below with a dry heat.

Then heather and honey arrive. The heather is dry and slightly bitter, the honey makes it warm and slow, and from under them daman comes through: the animal warmth of a sun-heated rock where small creatures have lived for years.

Towards evening everything settles into leather and moss. The leather lies smooth and warm, oakmoss draws up the damp of an autumn wood from below, and the animal warmth of daman stays at the wrist longest of all.

What sets it apart

The brand describes Adequate as a fragrance created to meet expectations: elegance beyond age and time, "le class" and a reliance on "old money". It is a leather chypre for men from 2019, part of the Chilini Private collection, with lavender and mint in the opening and leather with oakmoss in the base. What makes it rare is daman, an animal material from the fossilised traces of hyrax colonies on African rocks, gathered without touching the animals themselves. Daman gives the composition an animal warmth, and honey and leather sound deeper because of it. Reviewers say its staying power is off the scale: after six hours and three hand washes it can still be clearly smelled. It is worn by a man who has no need to prove anything, and the scent stays close to him and speaks for him before he says a word.
