Gauguin arrived in Tahiti in June 1891. In Noa Noa he described a neighbour who entered the hut to look at the pictures on the walls. He made a sketch — she ran away. An hour later she returned in a fine dress, with a flower in her hair.

The flower in the hair is Tahitian gardenia. The composition is built around tiare: sweetish, tropical, soft and many-voiced. Top — honeyed, with neroli. Heart — herbal, luxuriously golden. Base — tart-hot, vanilla.
