Chilini Private

By noon the air in the print shop already stood still. Ink, paper, dry dust from the trimmings. The apprentice reached for the transom. The master coughed — no. The niche fragrance Debauch by Edgardio Chilini, on the man at the high table, did not ask for air. It sat at once. Dense. Bright. No cold edge.

He had come to check a print run of a book that was not his. He held the sheet against the lamp. He looked not at the title — in the middle of the page, where a letter jumps and no one watches. He said: here. He pointed with a nail. He said nothing more about himself.

They worked without the talk that fills a room. The master cursed the press. The apprentice mixed the order of the sheets. The man at the table waited until the fault was mended, and took the next sheet. When they asked him to glance for a minute, he glanced. He left behind no opinion of another man's craft.

By five the stack lay even. The master pushed a proof at him to keep. He did not take it. He set right the strap on the apprentice's bag: the knot already held what iron should hold. He put on his coat in the porch. He nodded. He went.

In the room where they never opened the window, Debauch stayed the same voice. It did not thin into freshness. It did not grow lighter from another man's fatigue. It simply was.

How it wears

There is no freshness. Not in the first minute, not later. The aldehydes here are not laundry and not water: a fatty gleam, hot wax, metal already warm. The flower is heavy — rose and jasmine under clove and cinnamon, with no dew. Birch and cypress are bark and resin. Leather and styrax come early and do not leave. Sandalwood, moss, ambergris hold the weight. Toward the fade the drawing is the same, only thicker.
