Most evenings pass as they always do: they speak of the day, put out the light, and say nothing to the end. More rarely there is an evening when a person does not hurry. The niche fragrance Bed Of Flowers by Edgardio Chilini belongs to such an evening.

She is at home. The room is still light, though it is already darkening outside. He sits not opposite her but beside her, and speaks slowly. The words are simple. She recognizes them at once — not because she was waiting for a speech, but because the voice has finally matched what she had long known about herself.

The face is calm. No scene. She is not being judged. She is seen. That is enough for the air in the room to change — warmer, thicker, as after cut flowers are brought in and not yet put in water.

A happy life here is not a slogan and not morning coffee. For now it is enough that the words have been said. There is no need to think further.

I will strew our bed with flowers.

How it wears

The opening is bright and juicy: citrus — bergamot, mandarin, kumquat — and fruit water: blackcurrant, melon, raspberry, lychee, plum, peach, pear. Orange blossom ties fruit to flower. Pepper, elemi and ivy are a green spark at the edge.

The heart is a floral mass. White flower leads: gardenia, freesia, jasmine, lily, lily of the valley, magnolia. Rose, peony, lilac, mimosa and osmanthus hold the warmth. Violet and ylang sit at the edge of the bouquet.

The base receives the mass: sandalwood, cedar, benzoin, styrax, musk. Patchouli and oakmoss are a quiet floor. By morning what remains is warm wood.

This is not one rose on a pillow. A heap of what has been cut: citrus and fruit water first, then white flower — gardenia, jasmine, lily — dense, almost wet. The base is warm: wood, benzoin, musk. The fragrance is assembled, not a solo. Sweet without treacle. By morning the warmth of wood remains, not jam.
