Tar Cuir de Russie. The Old Horseshoe

On the windowsill of Demyan's workshop lay an old horseshoe, dark and worn smooth by time. He had found it on the road the year he came to learn the trade, and ever since he had moved it from place to place without daring to nail it over any door.
Demyan sewed and mended harness for stables all over the district. Bridles, straps and girths hung along his walls, and in winter there was always more work.
In December deep snow fell. In the morning Demyan put Tar Cuir de Russie on his wrists, and bergamot and lemon sounded cold and clean, like the frosty air outside the door.
By noon neroli and birch tar opened on his skin, smoky and slightly bitter, and soft leather showed through behind them. Demyan stitched a new bridle with an even seam and never lost the line.
Rostislava, who kept a stable across the river, came to collect her order and brought an old halter to be mended.
"Demyan, it smells here the way the old village stable of my childhood smelled: tar and good leather. I've just built a new stable, and there's still nothing over its door," said Rostislava.
By evening leather, sandalwood, styrax and amber remained, warm and deep. Demyan looked at the windowsill and picked up the horseshoe.
He rode with Rostislava across the river and nailed the horseshoe over the door of the new stable while the horses were still awake.
How it sounds
The opening is fresh and cool: bergamot and lemon sound clean and austere, without sweetness.
The heart is neroli and birch tar. The neroli is almost transparent, and the tar gives the leather a dark smoky edge, but never a burnt one.
In the base leather, sandalwood, styrax and amber make the sound warm, rounded and slightly sweet. The trail is deep and cosy.
What makes it special
Tar Cuir de Russie belongs to the Chilini Private collection, which gathers fragrances made from costly and rare materials. The brand describes it as a fragrance on the theme of tarred leather, made with an old recipe in mind: the composition is aged for a long time at fairly high temperatures, which gives it stability and a noble vintage spirit. The pyramid is deliberately simple. It is a leather woody unisex fragrance for autumn and winter.
