On the shelf in Frol's booth stood a wooden chess knight, white, with the tip of one ear chipped off. Three summers ago it had been found under the bench of a rental boat, and no one ever came back for it.
Frol rented out boats on the pond in the city park. He had not played chess since childhood, but he kept the knight: it looked out at the water, and to Frol the booth seemed lived in that way.
In July there was a week of heat. In the morning Frol put Tangerine Sorbet on his wrists, and tangerine and clementine sounded juicy and cool, while mint and green tea added freshness.
By noon there was no shade left on the landing. Neroli, orange blossom and chamomile opened on his skin, bright and slightly bitter, and all day Frol cheerfully pushed boats off from the pier and counted oars.
Velimir, a neighbour from his building, came to feed the ducks and lingered by the booth.
"Frol, you smell of tangerines, like school holidays when I was a boy. Listen, I have an old chess set at home, and there is a button instead of the white knight," said Velimir. Frol silently pointed at the shelf.
By evening heliotrope, sandalwood and musk remained, soft and warm, and the tangerine still sounded close by. The last boat came back at sunset.
Velimir brought the board, Frol took the knight down from the shelf, and on the bench by the landing they played their first game.
How it sounds
The opening is juicy and cool: tangerine and clementine sound like fresh pulp, orange adds zest, and mint, ivy and green tea bring green freshness.
In the heart neroli, petitgrain and orange blossom make the citrus floral. Chamomile, peony, basil and jasmine add a light herbal bitterness.
In the base heliotrope, sandalwood, amber and musk hold the tangerine long and softly, without a sharp fade.
