At nine she turned the sign on the door, and as always the string caught on the hook, so that "Closed" hung crooked. Her shoulders ached after twelve hours at the coffee machine, and the last bus left in forty minutes.

The coffee shop stood by the station: eight tables and a counter. Over three winters she had learned to close it in half an hour: pull out the drip trays, flush the machine, knock out the spent grounds, count the till and open the small top window so the room could air overnight. To anyone who knocked after nine she silently pointed at the sign.

That morning, as usual, she had put Caféier on her wrists. All day other people's cups, hot milk and the cinnamon from the cappuccinos covered it, and she forgot about it until evening.

Now frost came in through the open window, and the smell of the room drifted out into the street. She was rinsing the milk jug under hot water, and from her warmed hands coffee rose, sweet and spiced, with cardamom and warm vanilla. The room already smelled of snow and a wet floor, and the coffee was left only on her.

Someone knocked on the glass. Outside stood a man with a travel bag, his scarf white with frost up to his eyes. She raised a hand towards the sign. He nodded at the open window she was standing by and said through the glass: "It smells of coffee in there. I've just come off the train, four hours on the road."

She looked at the clock above the counter. Then at his hands, red and bare, on the handle of the bag.

She untangled the string, hung the sign straight and opened the door. The machine took fifteen minutes to heat. He asked for a sweet americano and held the glass in both hands until his fingers came back to life.

She missed her bus.

The fullest possible embodiment of the scent of coffee.

How it wears

Freshly ground coffee rises first, bitter and dense, cardamom and cinnamon make it spicy, and raspberry gives a short, bright tartness.

After an hour the top fades and the coffee stays. It turns warm and round, saffron and a quiet flower come through beside it, and together they sound like a sweet americano drunk slowly.

Towards evening sandalwood and cedar settle beneath the coffee, vanilla and tonka bean warm it against the skin, and right up to night it is still the same coffee, only quieter and warmer.

What sets it apart

Caféier belongs to the private Chilini Private collection, a gourmand spicy fragrance for women and men, made for autumn and winter. The brand calls it the fullest possible embodiment of the smell of coffee, builds it around the scent of a sweet americano and gathers several rare coffee varieties in its heart. What makes Caféier rare is that the smell of coffee holds on the skin from the first minute until evening. The author of the hab_tales channel hears a coffee shop in it more than a cup, one cooling down late in the evening, and writes that Mugler has done a great deal on the coffee theme, yet he has not met such a full, rounded sound there. On La Parfumerie it was described as a hot coffee shop you step into out of the frost. Montale has a coffee fragrance too, where the coffee is woven into a rosy musk and sounds feminine, while Caféier sounds stricter and more masculine. It is worn in winter, when you want the warmth of a coffee shop to walk down the street with you.
