She balanced other people's books better than her own. By the end of each month their columns came out to the kopeck. Her own account had not balanced for two months: a client whose entire bookkeeping she had put in order back in spring had been writing "next week" for seven weeks running.

The heating had not been turned on yet. She sat in the kitchen in an old sweater with the sleeves pulled down over her fingers, and the zero key on her calculator stuck, so every zero had to be pressed twice. She never rang the client a second time in one day: it felt shameful to hurry a man who knew the figure perfectly well. Her phone lay by her elbow, screen up, and every notification made her shoulder jerk. On the fridge, under a magnet, hung a slip of paper with the rent date circled in red. In the evenings she washed her cup, set it upside down on the towel and opened the same file again.

She had ordered the sample at the start of the month, half as a joke. The cap said "Денежные духи", Money Perfume, and the name struck her as too blunt, almost indecent for someone who counts other people's money. The CDEK envelope lay in the hallway next to her keys for a week. That evening she tore it open, because her own perfume had run out back in February.

Two sprays on the wrists, two on the neck, front and back. The drop on the nape of her neck was cold, and she shivered. Then the scent arrived as if from the window, though the window was shut: lemon, mint, bitter peel, as though someone had flung open a pane onto October. After it came something dry and clean, and she recognised it before she could name it. It was the smell of a fresh bundle of banknotes in its bank band, back when she was nineteen and sat at a cashier's window tearing those bands open with her thumbnail: paper, ink, cold fingers.

Her shoulders slid down, and she noticed only because the neck of her sweater suddenly felt loose. She made her wish silently, briefly, without heat: let it move. Let what has been done stop hanging. Then she turned the phone face down, laid it beside the cup and opened another client's file.

In the morning the client did not call. Nor the next day. She worked, pressed the sticking zero twice, walked past the red circle on the fridge and no longer hunched her shoulders. By evening the cuff of her sweater smelled of wood and, very faintly, of lemon.

He called on the fourth day. He apologised at length and muddled the dates. An hour later the phone gave a short buzz on the table, face down: the transfer had arrived, the one that had been "any day now" for all those weeks.

That evening she washed the cup, set it upside down and took the slip with the red circle off the fridge.

A feather on the scales.

How it wears

Cold comes first. Lemon and mint spray out like zest pared from chilled fruit, and the fine droplets sting the fingers. Inside this freshness saffron runs like a thin dry thread.

Then the freshness turns green. Hyacinth smells of a juicy stem just snapped, and violet leaf is cool like a coin taken from an autumn coat pocket. Green tea dries the greenery a little, and breathing grows steadier.

Towards evening the fragrance settles into wood. Cedar and cypress are dry as shavings from a freshly sharpened pencil, and vetiver brings a faintly bitter earth. Musk and sandalwood stay on the sleeve as an even warmth, and by night the morning's spark of lemon can still be heard in it.

What sets it apart

Denezhnye Dukhi smells cool and clean: citrus, herbs, greenery and dry wood. It is equally beautiful on a man and on a woman. It was discovered by chance, during work on a different composition, and the effect people buy it for has repeated for many of them, though no one gives guarantees and it is different for everyone. It is blended one litre at a time, and each litre is a little different: one has more freshness, another more staying power, yet you recognise it at once. Apply at least four sprays, on the wrists and on the neck, front and back. There is no ritual. You phrase the wish calmly, let it go and get on with your work. It helps you breathe more evenly while the scales are still swinging.
