The window in the new flat would not open: the damp had warped the frame over the winter, and for the third week Sonya had been breathing through the narrow top vent.
She had moved to this city in April, for work, and so far knew only the way to the bus stop. She greeted the neighbours with a nod and shut the door behind her at once.
In May the yard turned green. Children thumped a ball beneath the windows, and in the evenings the neighbour from the third floor sat by the entrance making something at a small workbench.
On Saturday morning Sonya touched the stopper to her wrists. Theme Muguet opened with crisp green apple and a coolness like the air after a thunderstorm.
By noon lily of the valley was ringing on her skin, fresh and dewy, as if she had just walked through a May forest. Staying indoors became impossible. Sonya put on her trainers and went down to the yard.
The neighbour looked up from his workbench. "Smells of lily of the valley. Where are they growing round here?" he asked. Sonya laughed, showed him her wrist and, since they were talking anyway, asked about the stubborn frame.
An hour later he stood at her window with a plane, shaving the edge of the frame while she held a torch for him. By evening soft cedar and clean musk remained on her skin.
When the neighbour had gone, Sonya pushed the frame, and the window swung wide open. The warm May evening came into the room.
How it smells
The opening is transparent and ringing: green apple gives a crisp freshness, bellflower and aloe add dewy greenery, and ozone fills the composition with air.
In the heart is the lily of the valley itself, fresh and crystalline. Around it chamomile, freesia and cyclamen sound bright and tender, while rose and jasmine make the flower round and soft.
In the base, cedar, sandalwood and vetiver give a light woody support, and musk leaves a clean, gentle trail on the skin.
What makes it special
Theme Muguet belongs to the Olfactorium collection and to the Fragrance Theme series, conceived as a set of études: each scent develops one perfume theme to an author's vision. Here the theme is lily of the valley, spring in a bottle: a whole glade of flowers among green leaves, bathed in warm May sunshine. It is a fresh green floral scent for spring and summer.
"A very fresh, cool scent with lots of air in it," writes Vera0305 on Kosmetista. "The lily of the valley here is a morning one, white bells in dew… I adore it and wear it very often. It is ideal for summer."
Vera on her channel calls it a real living lily of the valley, "natural, fresh, lit by the sun." @juliasperfume hears it as soft, understated, joined by other spring flowers and rounded by rose. One Kosmetista reviewer puts it simply: "A very beautiful scent!"
People wear it for spring on the skin: freshness, air and the feeling that the best is yet to come.
