A magnolia without a greenhouse.
In the drawer of Ustinya's control panel lay a folded paper fan with white flowers on a pink ground. A friend had given it to her on her first day at work, and Ustinya was so afraid of tearing the thin paper that she had never once opened it.
Ustinya drove the funicular that carried people from the seafront to the upper street of a seaside town. The car climbed the slope dozens of times a day, and by lunchtime she knew almost every passenger by sight.
In June the first heat arrived. In the morning Ustinya put Theme Magnolia on her wrists, and grapefruit, apple and ginger sounded bright and fresh, while galbanum and blackcurrant added a green bitterness.
By noon magnolia opened on her skin, bright and lush, with the honeyed warmth of osmanthus and plumeria. The car was stuffy, but all day Ustinya drove it briskly and smoothly.
Evsey, a pensioner from the upper street, rode up every day at the same time.
"Ustinya, your car smells of magnolia, like June when I was a boy. You know, they have just come into bloom by the upper station, have you seen them?" asked Evsey. Ustinya shook her head.
By evening mastic wood, cedar, sandalwood and musk remained, delicate and light, and the magnolia still sounded close by. After the last run Ustinya took the fan out of the drawer.
She walked to the trees by the upper station, stood beneath the white flowers and opened the fan for the first time.
How it sounds
The opening is bright and lively: grapefruit and ginger bring a fresh bitterness and peppery sharpness, apple is crisp, and galbanum and blackcurrant add greenery.
The heart is magnolia, large and bright. Osmanthus, plumeria and honey give it a light warmth, birch, freesia and orchid keep it fresh, and the scent never turns cloying.
In the base mastic wood, cedar, sandalwood and musk leave a delicate light woody trail.
What makes it special
Theme Magnolia belongs to the Olfactorium collection and the Theme series. The brand card puts it briefly: the flower is clean and sounds on the skin. It is a women's citrus floral fragrance for spring and summer.
