Every morning Vadim walked through the park to his studio in leather gloves fastened with a snap at the wrist. He walked fast, looked straight ahead and greeted only his colleagues.

His staff thought him haughty. He returned drawings with short notes in red pencil, and the young architects were shy of entering his office.

In November fog settled over the park, and wet leaves covered the paths in a thick layer. That morning Vadim had put Le Bois de Boulogne on his neck, a warm leathery scent with spice that he had worn for many years.

By the old pond someone tugged at his sleeve. In front of him stood a girl of about five in a yellow raincoat, trying hard to hold back her tears. She had lost her mother in the fog.

Vadim crouched down to be the same height as her. The girl pressed her face into his shoulder and went quiet. "You smell like Daddy's jacket," she said, calmer now.

He took off his gloves, pushed them into his pocket and held her small cold hand. They walked slowly around the pond, and Vadim loudly and patiently called out the mother's name, which the girl had told him.

The mother was found at the gates, pale, phone in hand. She hugged her daughter and thanked Vadim for a long time, while the little one waved her yellow sleeve at him.

He was twenty minutes late to the studio. The gloves stayed in his coat pocket, and that day Vadim went to the young architects himself and sat down to go through their projects together with them.

The composition wraps you in a fragrant cocoon that, even on a gloomy day, creates a protective shell of serenity around you.

How it smells

The opening is fresh and spicy. Bergamot and grapefruit give citrus brightness, green apple adds juiciness, bay leaf and Sichuan pepper bring a dry tingling spice, cardamom cools.

The heart opens into a floral-spicy bouquet. Rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang sound softly, iris and violet leaf add powdery greenness, nutmeg warms the flowers.

The base is deep and warm. Leather comes forward together with labdanum, teak and sandalwood give dry woodiness, vetiver and oakmoss leave a trail of forest earth.

What makes it special

Le Bois de Boulogne belongs to the private Chilini Private collection, whose scents are made from expensive and rare materials. It is a leather chypre that the brand describes as haughty and strict, hot and at the same time tender and soft. hab on Fragrantica writes that "from the very start you clearly hear textured leather, seasoned with moss, nutmeg… and bay leaf," and notes longevity of "around 12 hours." Another Fragrantica reviewer hears in it "the atmosphere of an October forest": "damp earth, yellow leaves… resin frozen on the trees." Vera0305 on Kosmetista calls it "incredibly beautiful vintage classic." People wear it for a calm, protective warmth on gloomy days.
