Wonderland
Her niece had made the paper rabbit ears herself, out of white card, and put them on her head right in the hallway. She took them off, smiled with her lips only and laid them on the shelf by the mirror.
She was a chief accountant, and in June her report was due. Her sister had gone away for two days and left her seven-year-old Sonya with her, and the laptop full of spreadsheets sat on the kitchen table all day.
That morning she had put Alice on her wrists. Her colleagues had given her the bottle from the collection for her birthday, and since March it had stood on the shelf untouched.
Sonya kept calling her to have tea with the dolls under the table, then to look for the rabbit in the wardrobe, then to have tea again. Each time she answered «Wait five minutes» and buried herself in the numbers again. By lunchtime Sonya had stopped calling and sat quietly under the table alone.
She reached for her cup, and the scent came from her wrist, juicy and bright, like a summer noon in a garden. First sparkling citrus, then mango and pineapple, warm and sweet. The scent was so cheerful that sitting over a spreadsheet felt awkward.
Sonya peeped out from under the table. «What do you smell of?» she asked. «Fruit», she answered. «Like in Wonderland», Sonya said seriously.
She closed the laptop and crawled under the table. It was cramped and funny there, a doll in a hat sat at the head, and Sonya poured her imaginary tea into a tiny cup.
Then she went to the hallway for the paper ears, put them on and came back under the table. She finished the report at night, after Sonya had fallen asleep.
